Our MissionABOUT US

History of the School

St. Hubert Seminary was opened on September 30, 1970 by Most Rev. Peter Kwasi Sarpong, the fourth Diocesan Bishop of Kumasi. The seminary was named after the first Kumasi Diocesan Bishop Most Rev. HUBERT PAULISSEN, S.M.A.Upon assumption of office in March 1970,Bishop Sarpong opened St. Hubert Seminary in September 1970 and appointed his Vicar General, Very Rev. Fr. Robert Mensah Abrampah,(1970 – 1973) former chaplain of Opoku Ware School, also as the first Rector of the infant seminary. In 1995, Archbishop Sarpong, responding to the needs of Catholic parents opened up the school to admit a limited number of students as non-seminarians. All the non-seminarians were Catholics and also non-residential students. A second stream was thus created TO OFFER HOLISTIC EXCELLENT CATHOLIC EDUCATION for other boys who just wanted a good catholic secondary education for the secular world. It is the success of the expanded vision and mission of offering quality catholic education to non-seminarians that grew to the policy of partnership with government at St. Hubert. In 2005, the school joined the public education system to partner government in secondary education. About 50 acres of the original diocesan seminary land was earmarked for the development of the expanded vision of St. Hubert. In the partnership, St. Hubert still remains the bona fide property of the Archdiocese of Kumasi under its management but opens its facilities to public use.

Current Status

The school currently runs three courses of study – General Science, General Arts and Business. There are four houses to accommodate students in the boarding house. These are: Bishop Paulissen House, Bishop Bronk House and Bishop Essuah House and Bishop Sarpong House. These houses in all accommodate eight hundred and seven (807) students out of the total number of one thousand three hundred and sixty six (1366) students in the school.
St. Hubert Seminary SHS has a total staff strength of one hundred and seventeen (117). This is made up of seventy one (71) teaching staff and forty six (46) non teaching staff. Out of this number, there are only nine (9) resident teachers on campus with labourers’ quarters housing ten (10) labourers.

Achievements

The school prides itself in some modest successes. The most obvious one is that SAHUSS has produced a lot of religious leaders – priests and reverend sisters. At present, five bishops of the Kumasi Province of the Catholic Church are products of the school. These are the Bishops of Techiman, Sunyani, Goaso, and Obuasi Dioceses and the Archbishop of the Kumasi Archdiocese. Since the school went secular and public, it has as well helped trained and produced a lot of men of integrity in various fields of endeavour. The General Arts programme, obviously, being the longest programme of the school has produced a lot of lawyers, planners, economists, lecturers, teachers, consultants and various other professionals in all fields of endeavour. In the Business Department, mention could be made of our products holding prominent positions as bankers, accountants, marketers, human resource practitioners among others. In spite of the fact that General Science programme was introduced fairly recently (five years ago) the records so far have been quite impressive. The first batch of science students wrote the WASSCE in 2014. That same year, the school announced its presence in the prestigious National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) at the national level, a feat which a lot of schools have been struggling to achieve. In 2016, SAHUSS featured prominently and got to the semi-finals in the NSMQ. In fact, SAHUSS was the 2017 Ashanti Regional champions of the NSMQ. Aside this remarkable feat, the performance of our science students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is also very impressive. Most of our students have gained admission into various universities across the country to pursue further studies in medicine, engineering, pharmacy, nursing and agriculture. The Ashanti Regional Student Representative Council (ARSRC) has started a general knowledge quiz competition dubbed the ‘ACME QUIZ’. Once again, SAHUSS has been featuring competitively in this contest. We are currently the zonal champions of Zone 2 and placed third in the final regional contest. In sports, the school is severely disadvantaged by virtue of our numbers and the gross lack of facilities and equipment. This notwithstanding, the school qualified to participate in the Super Zonal contest after a marvelous display at the Zonal level of the competition.

Location

The school is located at Santasi, a suburb of the Kumasi Metropolis. It is about two (2) kilometres from the Santasi roundabout, off the Kumasi – Obuasi highway. It shares boundaries with the Christian Village Guest House, Martyrs of Uganda R/C Junior High School, Opoku Ware School and the Arch Diocesan Health Pharmacy. The digital address of the school on the Ghana Post GPS is AK-364-8657
